The grapes of the Kleinood Tamboerskloof John Spicer Syrah shimmer in the glass in an intense garnet red and exude the fruity fragrance of cherries and ripe plums. Nuances of cinnamon, cedar wood and other spices provide the complexity of the red wine, whose grapes come from a single vineyard, already on the nose. The Kleinood Tamboerskloof John Spicer Syrah matured in French oak for 20 months and is an excellent match for dark meat or game marinated with herbs. Duck or spicy dishes from the Asian cuisine are also a good choice with this red wine.

Kleinood – a little gem at the bottom of the Helderberg

When Gerard de Villiers and his wife Mrs Libby discovered this piece of land in the year 2000, on which the winery Kleinood (Africaans for gem) is placed today, they were shattered: The beauty and the charm of the nature in front of the majestic scenery of the Helderberg in Blaauwklippen valley won their hearts and they established a winery out of this down-and-out fruit farm – that in the true sense of the word has become a gem. Up to this point it has been a long way. The new owners created more space for local plants and planted 200 trees. Over several years the soils and the climate had been analyzed to find the right location for the grape varieties. Kleinood has specialized in Syrah, completed by Viognier and an olive grove, which extends over two hectares and provides the fruits for the Boerin Extra Virgin Olive Oil.

Kleinood´s wines tell a story

The family de Villiers is the first owner of the estate who has planted vines on this place. However, the viticulture is so to speak in Gerard´s blood because he is a direct descendant of the Huguenot Jacob de Villiers, who came to South Africa in 1688 and whose family has left a lasting influence on the wine industry on the Cape over the centuries – Kleinood and its wines are no exception. Gerard de Villiers, a passionate engineer, has designed and built the State of the Art Cellar of the winery on his own. 14 fermenting vessels in different sizes are ready for the fermentation and the room in which the wines mature in the wood has four different temperature zones. It is the balance of science and passion that serves as a basis for the wines of the Tamboerskloof range. Both the critics and wine connoisseurs alike praised the four creations of the collection and especially the Viognier and the Katharien Syrah Rosé are highly requested. On the one hand, the name Tamboerskloof goes back to the suburb of Cape Town, where the family de Villiers lived for 25 years before they moved to the Winelands. On the other hand, the name reminds one of the guards, who were stationed on the viewpoints on the mountains and hills of the Cape peninsula in former times. When a ship came closer, this message was delivered from one position to another by means of the drums and was a signal for the farmers in the surrounding valleys to make their way to the harbour with their fruits and vegetables to provide the ships with provisions.

Environmental consciousness is high on the list of priorities in many areas

The labels of the wines are made by hand out of recycled paper and are printed by an antique wooden press. On the back side a sheep is depicted that carries a flag, which also embellishes the logo of Kleinood – a memory of the family emblem of the Villiers. Not only in the labels, but also in many different areas, the great environmental consciousness of the winery is evident and for its effort the winery has obtained the certificate of the biodiversity and wine initiative. The accruing rubbish is separated and its amounts are kept as small as possible. Moreover, solar panels were installed on the roof of the wine cellar in 2013 and in the vineyards, ladybugs are employed as a natural pest control. All of this contributes to ensuring that Kleinood will remain what it is today: A little masterpiece which represents wines of high quality.
