On the slopes of the Helderberg in Stellenbosch lies the Stellenzicht wine estate. Ancient sandstone soils form the foundation for the elegant wines. The estate got its shape and its present name in the 20th century – but its roots go back to the beginnings of viticulture in the Cape, as Stellenzicht was part of the Rustenberg wine estate founded in 1684. In the course of time, there were repeated land transfers, for example in 1931, when the Stuttaford family bought various estates, among others, and founded the Stellenrust farm. Today's Stellenzicht occupies a large part of this area. As complicated as the historical development of the estate may seem – the philosophy is quite simple: "In pursuit of balance".
In the picturesque surroundings of the Helderberg, the wines are produced in harmony with nature. Sustainable and resource-conserving cultivation therefore plays a major role at Stellenzicht. In order for the wines to express their terroir in the best possible way, the team invested a lot of time in determining the available soil types so that each grape variety receives the ideal location. For the red grape varieties, the focus is on Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Cinsault, while for the white varieties, the focus is on Chardonnay. The team's sustainable methods and efforts help to protect the local flora and fauna - with success, as dragonflies have reestablished themselves in the vineyards. The adaptable animal, however, not only stands for sustainability, but is also a symbol for the future: the Stellenzicht team is ready to adapt if necessary to maintain the balance. So it is only logical that the dragonfly – as a connecting element for sustainability and the future - also adorns the Stellenzicht logo.
In the wine cellar, the best that nature offers the winegrowers is brought out with minimal intervention but a lot of attention. With skill, experience and patience, excellent wines are created, which can be tasted in the tasting room called "The Wine Pod". The building was constructed largely from recycled and recyclable materials and incorporates nature into its structure. Each wine collection makes reference to the history, topography or soils of the estate by name. While the fruity and fresh creations of the Thunderstone line – meaning thunderstones - were made to be enjoyed with friends, the single-varietal reds Arenite Syrah, Tristone Cabernet Sauvignon and Silcrete Cinsault showcase the particularities of the vineyard's respective soils. The flagship of the portfolio is formed by the two complex wines Acheulean Red and Chardonnay. But no matter which of the elegant wines you enjoy in "The Wine Pod" – the breathtaking view makes you forget that you are only five kilometres away from the city, because Stellenzicht is a place where you can switch off from everyday life with a good glass of wine.
