Shiraz – one variety, two styles

The Shiraz grape is known as Syrah in its country of origin France. It yields very spicy, crimson red, pepper smelling and tasting red wine. Furthermore Syrah is rich of tannins and has a dry and smokey aftertaste. In the New World the grape is mostly known as Shiraz. Although it is the same grape variety it differs much from the french variety. In Australia the variety yields one of the most intensive red wines of the contry and is known for mature and strong wine.

Shiraz – red wine variety world wide importance

The Shiraz vine is resistent against many diseases and pest. This is why it has spread all over the world. Wine growers in Australia, Spain, Argentina, Switzerland and the USA like to plant the noble grape and do so with much success. Also Shiraz from South Africa is very common. According to a legend, crusaders took the vine from the Persian town Shiraz and brought it to Tain l´Hermitage. Scientists proved that Shiraz is a mixture out of the varieties Duerza and Mondeuse from the Rhône Valley.

Shiraz from South Africa

The Shiraz grape needs a warm climate to get its intensity and the sweet, soft and mature taste. Therefore Shiraz from South Africa tastes outstanding good because of the country’s excellent conditions for the ideal ripening process. Shiraz is very popular in South Africa. Especially in Paarl and Stellenbosch wine growers like to plant the variety. Wine lovers can find a large offer for South African Shiraz from different wine estates at our South Africa Wine Online Shop CAPREO.
