It all started with a vineyard and a garage in the backyard - today the Markus Schneider estate from Ellerstadt in the Palatinate is one of the most famous wineries in Germany. Although the parents already grew grapes, it was only with Markus Schneider that the family started to produce their own wine. He learned the trade in the neighbouring village at a renowned winery and has long since become one of the top names in the international wine world. Markus Schneider also owes his success to his courage to break new ground. This applies both to his wine creations and their marketing. The labels, designed with modern simplicity, had a high recognition value thanks to their clear language - labels in black and white simply stood out from the crowd in the mid-1990s. Not only was the design new, but also the renunciation of the name of the vineyard and the designation of quality. But the character of the wines was also completely different from what was previously known from the Palatinate: Opulent, juicy and wood-flavored. Until then, these characteristics were more applicable to wines from Southern France or South Africa.
Markus Schneider's first wine was simply called "Rotwein" - today known as "Einzelstück" - a wine made from hundred year old vines of the Portugieser variety. However, he became internationally known with the Black Print, a red wine cuvée with an unmistakable character. But also the straight Riesling wines are unmistakable in their style. The vineyard sites offer the grapes good conditions for optimal ripeness and Markus Schneider uses innovations to harmonize the different terroirs. The cultivation of the vines - half with white and half with red varieties - is carried out sustainably and with small yields, which are all the higher in terms of quality. Besides Riesling, the grape varieties include Pinot Gris, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc for the white and Pinot Noir, Merlot, Blaufränkisch or Cabernet Sauvignon for the red varieties. Some of the wine creations bear unusual names such as Tohuwabohu or Hullabaloo - a homage by Markus Schneider to his children - or Kaitui, which means "tailor" in the language of the New Zealand natives - a fitting name for a Sauvignon Blanc in New Zealand style.
Enchanting wines from Germany and South Africa: Markus Schneider's projects with winemaking colleagues
friends. One of these cooperations is the collaboration with Danie Steytler in South Africa. The result: the De Cutter Chenin Blanc as well as the red wine cuvée called Rooi Olifant. When the evening sun sets over Table Mountain, the large granite boulders are bathed in a red light - and remind one of a fat, red elephant. In Germany, Markus Schneider also makes common cause with his friend and winemaker colleague Thomas Hensel. The name of their project is "Hensel & Gretel", the title of the fairy tale of the same name also reflects the name "The Witch Hunter". The collection includes a fruity and intense Sauvignon Blanc and a velvety and multi-layered Pinot Noir, which will enchant every wine lover - just like the other wines of Markus Schneider.
