The grapes of Remhoogte Aspect Merlot come from the highest and steepest vineyards of the estate, which give the red wine its name. The fresh scent of sage and fennel is accompanied by plums and red currants. On the palate, juicy fruit and a fresh acidity are noticeable, providing a nice balance. The noticeable tannins will become even softer over time. The Remhoogte Aspect Merlot matured for 24 months in barriques and is an excellent accompaniment to aromatic dishes or a delicious cheese platter.

Remhoogte – terroir specific wines from Stellenbosch

In the heart of the Cape Winelands, only four kilometers away from Stellenbosch, lies the the winery Remhoogte. The winery, founded in 1812, owes its Dutch name the steep slopes of the Simonsberg, on which it has been founded and where the vineyards have been planted. Even thoug the history of the winery reaches back so far - the Boustred family is only the third owner of Remhoogte and already has pioneered when overtaking the winery in the year 1993. Because earlier on no wine has been planted on the winery. And yet, the complex soils of the winery pertain to the oldest soils in the world and add up to rich and authentic wines, which reflect their unique terroir – the best conditions for the production of first class creations that apart from the classic red grape varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Shiraz, focus also on the national grapes of South Africa Pinotage and Chenin Blanc.

Second-generation family business

Meanwhile, the brothers Rob and Chris have taken over the responsibility for the winery from their parents Juliet and Murray Boustred. While Rob takes care of the marketing, Chris is the winemaker of Remhoogte. When producing the wines, every step from the vineyard to the wine cellars is still made by hand and during this process the human interference should be kept as little as possible, keeping with the slogan “The wine is made in the vineyards”. When opening a bottle, Chris loves it to be able to discover everything that has influenced on the grape vines in the year of making of the wine – from climate to terroir. For this reason the philosophy of Remhoogte also includes the motto “wine should be experienced and not only drunk”. In the Tasting Room the guests have the opportunity to do exactly this and are invited to taste the wines of the premium or reserve range – in summer on the terrace with a wonderful view of the Stellenbosch Mountains and the wildlife reserve, in which zebras, gnus and springboks live, or during winter around the fireplace.

Sir Thomas Cullinan: A red wine with history

The complex and well balanced red wine-blend Sir Thomas Cullinan, is the flagship of the winery and with its dominant nuances of dark fruits, a great spice and floral notes this wine is in the true sense of the word a masterpiece. It is dedicated to the great grandfather of the same name of the winery owner Murray Boustred. Having immigrated from Ireland as a child, he founded the Cullinan diamond mine in South Africa and discovered the worldwide biggest uncut diamond at 3000 carate. While Thomas Cullinan was knighted by King George V. In 1910, two stones were created out of this diamond, called the Great and the Lesser Star of Africa, which adorn the sovereign´s sceptre and crown, both of which belong to the Crown Jewels of the United Kingdom. An equally great and extraordinary piece of family history. In order to being able to protect the unique and unmistakable character of the wines and nature for the future, Remhoogte is committed to sustainability, is a member of the Biodiversity and Wine initiative and put one third of its land under conservation, so that the native flora and fauna can develop fully.
