Vilafonté – first American-South African cooperation

Vilafonté is the first joint American-South African wine producing experiment within the global wine industry. Located at the foothill of Simonsberg Mountain in Stellenbosch, only four red grape varieties are grown on 42 hectares of land and very old soils. Vilafonté's goal is to create the best wines that need not fear international comparison – quite the opposite!

Arlene Mains

Arlene Mains had the desire to study at Stellenbosch University since she was a teenager – and completed her Master of Science in Wine Biotechnology there. After ten years of experience in viticulture, both locally and internationally, Arlene joined Vilafonté. "The world of winemaking is fascinating and enlightening and I want to be a part of it," Arlene describes her motivation. There is something magical about the Winelands in the Cape for her.

Vilafonté – an American-South African Partnership

The Vilafonté winery is the very first American-South African experiment in the wine industry. The American Zelma Long, one of America's best-known winemakers, and the South African Mike Ratcliffe wanted to create something very special at the foot of Simonsberg Mountain. On the 42 hectares, the best wines are created with influences from both wine cultures. Vilafonté's winemakers concentrate on the cultivation of four noble grape varieties: Cabernet SauvignonCabernet FrancMerlot and Malbec.

Vilafonté with the Highest Quality

The name of the Vilafonté winery is derived from the type of soil on which the vineyards are located. This special clay and gravel soil is called ‘vilafontes’ and is one of the oldest soil types in the world. The well developed soil provides the best conditions for growing small and intensive fruits. These are, rounded off by the gentle processing of the winemaker, the reason for the outstanding quality of the Vilafonté wines.

Vilafonté Wine at the Highest Level

The Vilafonté portfolio is small but fine. The Vilafonté Seriously Old Dirt is a complex and successful red wine blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon and refined by MalbecMerlot and Cabernet Franc. The refined wine impresses with a pleasant texture and a multi-faceted aroma that combines fruity and spicy notes.
