Anthonij Rupert – Winemaking Art at the Highest level

On the foothills of the majestic Groot Drakenstein Mountains, in the picturesque Franschhoek, lies the L’ Ormarins wine estate, home to Anthonij Rupert Wyne. Additionally exceptional vineyard sites of the winery are the estates Altima (Elandskloof), Riebeeksriver (Swartland) and Rooderust (Darling). The Cape of Good Hope wine range pays homage to the viticultural history of the Cape, whilst the Anthonij Rupert Range is considered as the flagship of the winery with its top-class red wines.

Mark van Buuren and Dawie Botha

Mark van Buuren is no stranger within the wine industry. His career started at the Hartenberg winery in Stellenbosch as an assistant of the renowned winemaker Carl Schultz. His dedication and his passion for wine and the trade of the winemakers led Mark to various wineries in South Africa (Guardian Peak Wines, Capaia Wines and David Frost Wines) and Australia. At Anthonij Rupert, the winemaker with the international experience is, amongst others, responsible for the white wine varieties of the Cape of Good Hope range and due to his enormous expertise and his down-to-earth attitude, gives it an even higher level of quality. Dawie Botha graduated from the University of Stellenbosch with an agricultural degree in Oenology and Viticulture in 2001. Subsequently, he gained a lot of practical experience both nationally and internationally, as he completed numerous harvests overseas – for example in France or California – and at the Cape. This earned him the position of Assistant Winemaker at Leopard's Leap (2003-2005) before Dawie Botha joined Anthonij Rupert Wines. In addition to his work as a winemaker, he continues to explore the world of wine and has already visited Tuscany, the Napa Valley and the Rhône. The knowledge he acquired during his travels is also reflected in the style of his wines. On the one hand, his creations show the complexity and depth typical of Old World wines, on the other hand, with their fruity and lively character; they are still an expression of the terroir of the Cape. Dawie's commitment and passion for his craft definitely pay off: the first wines from Anthonij Rupert's new red wine cellar were awarded 91 and 93 points by the famous Wine Spectator.

Anthonij Rupert: Best conditions at several locations

Anthonij Rupert has expanded considerably in recent years through the purchase of several wine-growing areas and, thanks to the exceptional terroir, offers the connoisseur a wide range of premium wines. The grapes for these come from all over the Western Cape: Rooderust in the Darling area, Riebeeksrivier in Swartland and Altima in Elandskloof. However, Anthonij Rupert's head office is on the L'Ormarins farm in Franschhoek. Each wine region creates the best varietal-specific growing conditions, catapulting Anthonij Rupert to become one of South Africa's best-known brands.

Anthonij Rupert – successful in wine competitions

In Franschhoek, on the L'Ormarins farm, the red grape varieties Syrah and Merlot feel particularly at home; Sauvignon Blanc is also grown here. In Eelandskloof, the popular white grape variety also grows – and with the Anthonij Rupert Cape of Good Hope Altima Sauvignon Blanc, it delivers an intense Sauvignon Blanc that has regularly convinced the experts of important wine awards such as the South Africa Report by Tim Atkin or the John Platter Wine Guide in recent years.

Anthonij Rupert creates numerous premium wines

While the Cape of Good Hope line is a tribute to the Cape's long winemaking tradition, the outstanding red wines are a hallmark of Anthonij Rupert. Anthonij Rupert wines such as the Optima or the Cabernet Sauvignon are of excellent quality, not for nothing is it considered a real insider tip by real wine connoisseurs. For white wine fans, the Anthonij Rupert Cape of Good Hope Serruria Chardonnay is a good choice. The Anthonij Rupert Main Blend is a blend of classic red grape varieties and is considered the flagship wine of the estate.
