The wines of the Cellar Selection are fruity and harmonious ‘every day drinking’ wines with great value for money. The premium wines bearing a Vineyard Selection label benefit from the prime location of their vines. The Family Reserve line includes true TOP wines such as the Kleine Zalze Chenin Blanc or Pinotage. Outstanding Climatic Conditions for the Cultivation

The South African winery Kleine Zalze is located less than three kilometres away from Stellenbosch. It was founded by Nicholas Cleef in 1683. None other than the founding father of South African wine cultivation, Simon van der Stel, was involved here and planted the first vines. Today’s winery Kleine Zalze Wines is owned by Kobus Basson and Rolf Schulz. On approximately 100 hectares cultivation area, the winemaking team plants the grape varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Chenin Blanc as well as Chardonnay, Pinotage, Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc.

The climatic conditions are perfectly suited for the cultivation of red and white wines alike. The climate with its Mediterranean and warm, sunny summers offers sufficient light intensity for the vineyards. The temperatures are between 26 and 36 degree Celsius. The winter months are pleasantly cool with their 15 degree Celsius but also never too cold. Furthermore, some of the higher located cultivation areas are advantageous since fresh sea breezes ideally cool the vines during the hot summers. In order to satisfy the high demand of the wines, the team uses not only its own grapes but also some from other wineries in Stellenbosch and in addition grape suppliers. Strict quality criteria and the constant incentive to only use the best yields create outstandingly high standards at Kleine Zalze.

Le Terroir – the Top Class Restaurant

Adjoining the winery, there is the numerously awarded restaurant called Le Terroir which is one of the best in South Africa. Culinary highlights are ensured with every visit due to the sophisticated kitchen of head chef Michael Broughton that is simple and never overly elaborate. He describes his style as follows: ‘What I leave off the plate is just as important as what I put on it.’ The hotel offers conference rooms and the luxurious golf course is almost worth a visit itself. The best way to relax is nevertheless still with one of the great wines of Kleine Zalze.
