The Philosophy at Glenelly

Glenelly and its winemakers follow a simple yet very successful philosophy for the winery. Each of the wines comes as unaltered as possible, without the addition of further ingredients, into the bottle. The winemakers harvest the grapes especially early in order to receive a low alcohol content by South African standards while simultaneously getting freshness and ripe tannins. The maturing process is only interfered in by the winemakers when it is absolutely necessary because they belief than only good and natural grapes and processes make for a good wine. One can taste this with every single sip of Glenelly’s produces.

Glenelly Glass Collection

At Glenelly, the owner May-Eliane de Lencquesaing very passionately collects glass in all kinds of variations. Visitors can marvel at the collection in the museum that belongs to the estate. In honour of the great passion for collecting of May-Eliane de Lencquesaing, the winemakers created the so-called Glass Collection. Only the noblest grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay are used for these fantastic wines. Furthermore, there are the two cuvees of the Grand Vin collection that impress with exceptional elegance and complexity. A further highlight is the flagship of the winery, Lady May, which has been awarded the maximum five stars by the renowned wine critic John Platter.

Glenelly with French Roots

In the 17th century, Glenelly came into the hands of the Frenchman François Villion. Back then, Simon van der Stel assigned the farm that is located at the foot of the Simonsberg to him. During the 19th century, the management of the winery was in the hands of two other owners before May-Eliane de Lencquesaing purchased it in 2003. Since then, she has been running the estate with plenty of skill and ambition. Before that, she had very successfully been running the famous winery Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande in a region that is very well-known amongst gourmets: Bordeaux. Yet the belief in South Africa and the unique terroir drew her to the Cape in order to create first class wine according to French tradition there – with exceptional success! Ever since, Glenelly stands for highest quality wine in every vintage.
